How do I save in Silent Hill 2?

Saving in Silent Hill 2 works a bit differently to what you may be familiar with in other, more recent, games.

Firstly, saving is not automatic. If you do not tell your game to save, it will not save. Secondly, you need to be at one of multiple specific locations to save. You can't just save wherever you like.

It's been a while since I last played Silent Hill 2, so I referred to the Fandom page to double check the specifics:

In Silent Hill 2, the save point takes the form of a small, bright red rectangle and is the same size as Mary's letter. It can found for the first time inside a well, in the beginning of the game. At first glance, it looks like a simple, red sheet of paper, sometimes stuck on walls.

As a final note, I recall that the number of saves you make affect the final score, when you complete the game. This should not alter the ending you receive, but if you are trying to get a good end score, you may want to try to limit the number of times you save.

I have not found any confirmation that this was actually the case for Silent Hill 2; I can confirm that it was for Silent Hill and various other survival horror games that came out around the same time.
