How do I link a .json folder to a .png in my items folder?

I’ve been following guides but still cant figure it out. (MC version 1.8.9). So I’m trying to link a .json file to the iron_sword.png file.
Heres the code:

For some reason, it keeps showing up as a black and purple block.
I got it to rotate, but it still showed as a black and purple block.
