Can I crop to an exact size in Darktable?

You should use combination of crop and export.

First you should define the exact crop ratio (Crop & Rotate tool). Resize and move (the crop) to the desired view.

Then select File on Disk as the Target Storage or click the folder icon to choose where to save the image. In file output size write one of the dimensions of desired size and click Export.

Using Crop & Rotate tool, which I guess you were already using, change aspect setting from 16:9 to freehand.

After you have done that you can change the aspect that you want (or size) by dragging the selection bar, which appears when mouse over the edge of picture.

I'm aware that it is a bit fiddly to change crop to a right size, but it should be possible to do.

Yes you can crop to an exact size by dragging the sizing around manually and eventually get it right on what you need but doing it repeatedly soon gets annoying.

To "input an exact size" I had to set up that particular size first.

I have a size I want to use often, so after manually getting the sizing correct, I saved this size as a pre-set in the crop and rotate tool. I can now apply it to any selected image which crops automatically but then turn the tool off then on again brings it back as a selected area, then I can move the selection around the image to choose which area is retained before using doubleclick to set it.

I'm using DarkTable 3.2.1 and it is possible to enter any custom ratio you would like in the darkroom > crop and rotate module. It's not obvious. Start by selecting the "aspect" attribute so that the drop down list appears of the pre-chosen aspect ratios. While the list is open just start typing on your keyboard "9:7" for example. Hit "enter" and you now have your desired aspect ration applied to your image.

With your ratio applied go to the Lighttable > Export selected module to enter the "max size" under global options to resize your image when exported. In this example I have a portrait image so just entered 1400 pixels for one edge. If you have a Landscape image you would enter 1400 in the first "max size" box and leave the second box empty. Entering one value stops the image from being distorted.
