Insertion problem

English Language & Usage Asked on March 2, 2021

I was given a task to describe the difference between the two sets of data points, one of which has already been addressed, and the other happens to be the exact opposite of the first one.

Below is a sentence I wrote:

There is a greater degree of overlap between the two sets of data points, which, contrary to what we have in the first case, overshadows the difference between the means.

I am not sure if the insertion here seems odd to you. I wonder if I could just trim it away and use "conversely" instead. It shouldn’t cause any confusion since the meaning is pretty clear in the given context where we only have two cases and one of them has already been
characterized. Therefore, I came up with another version:

……, which, conversely, overshadows the difference……

It seems more readable to me, but perhaps a bit abrupt as well?
