Is there any research on developing AGI systems based on meta-programming?

Meta-programming is programming that can modify itself, which is an appealing concept to me, given that I associate the idea of modifying one’s self with general intelligences (like humans).

I think that the combination of meta-programming with evolutionary algorithms could lead to the development of an AGI system, provided that the creation of an AGI system is possible.

So, is there any research on developing AGI systems based on meta-programming?
