Will an EU copy of Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow play on an American New 2DS XL?

What it says on the tin. I have an EU copy of DoS (specifically German, I think). It plays fine, obviously, on my regular ol’ DS, since that ain’t region locked. BUT. When I pop it into my New 2DS and try to boot the game up, I get smacked in the face with a message saying: "An error has occurred. Please hold down the Power button to turn off the system. Please consult the user manual". Or something like that. Now, I’ve seen some conflicting information on the nature of PAL DS games being able to play on non-PAL 3DS systems, so my question is this: Can the PAL version of Dawn of Sorrow, specifically, play on an American system? I ask because I need to know if this is a region-locking issue or if it’s a malfunctioning "the universe hates me" kinda thing. Thanks.
